On an ordinary morning at a coffee shop in Houston’s Woodland Heights neighborhood, a routine scene turned into a thrilling pursuit when a woman bravely confronted and subdued a thief to reclaim her stolen backpack. The entire episode, which unfolded outside Uncle Bean’s Coffee last Monday, was recorded on surveillance video.
Claudia, a frequent patron of the coffee shop, was engrossed in her work on her computer when her morning was disrupted. Describing the moment the theft occurred, Claudia said, “I was just minding my own business. I just feel a presence.”
The surveillance video revealed two women approaching her before one abruptly snatched her backpack, and both fled the scene.
Claudia’s immediate reaction was spurred by the abruptness of the act. “She wasn’t gentle. Maybe if she would have been gentle taking the backpack, I wouldn’t have noticed, but she was pretty abrupt. It startled me,” she explained.
Claudia acted quickly, pursuing the suspects without hesitation. The chase culminated in Claudia tackling one of the women in the street, leading to a confrontation that resulted in her regaining possession of her bag.

Reflecting on her impulsive reaction, Claudia shared, “I had that moment: ‘This is not happening.’ Really, I cannot tell you what I did, why I did it. It was mental-activated, and I just was on automatic.”
After emerging triumphant, Claudia successfully retrieved her backpack, which held numerous valuable items such as her American and Cuban passports.
Grateful for her physical fitness, she credited her paddle training for her ability to sprint after and subdue the thief. “Thankfully, the training from my paddle lessons has been paying off, so I felt in shape to run after them,” she remarked.
After the incident, Claudia has gone the extra mile to protect her possessions by buying a hook for her bag to deter any potential thefts.
Demonstrating her resolve and a touch of humor, she warned potential thieves, “Next time, if they try to grab the backpack, they’ll drag the table with them. Don’t try to steal from a Cuban.”
After the incident, Claudia promptly notified a nearby police officer and submitted a report to the Houston Police Department.
The authorities are currently asking for assistance from the public in identifying the individuals involved in the attempted theft.
