Singer and producer Pharrell Williams recently voiced his discontent with celebrities making political endorsements, stating that people don’t care about their political opinions, as reported by The Blast.
“I don’t do politics,” Williams told the Hollywood Reporter.
He elaborated, “It actually bothers me when I see celebrities telling people who to vote for. I’m like, ‘What? Shut up. Nobody asked you.’”
Williams emphasized that celebrities should focus more on taking action for causes they believe in rather than endorsing political candidates.
“I prefer to stay out of the way, and I’ll vote the way I’m going to vote,” he said. “I care about my community and the country, but I believe there’s a lot of work to be done, and I’m all about action.”
Williams highlighted the two nonprofits he founded—YELLOW, promoting education equality, and Black Ambition, supporting Black and Hispanic entrepreneurs—as examples of his commitment to action.
His comments came shortly after Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris following a debate with former President Donald Trump.
However, Swift’s endorsement didn’t create a significant bump in support for Harris.
Other celebrities like Billie Eilish and her brother Phinneas also voiced support for Harris, but the broader Hollywood community has been relatively quieter this election cycle.
Some may feel cautious after the Biden years, fearing that overly vocal endorsements could harm their brands by alienating fans.
Usher Raymond echoed this sentiment during an appearance on The View, acknowledging that while he planned to vote Democrat, he preferred to keep his political opinions private.
Similarly, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a vocal anti-Trump figure in 2020, has opted not to endorse any candidate this election season.
He even praised Trump’s resilience following the assassination attempt in July.
