Geoffrey Hinton, hailed as the “Godfather of AI” for his pivotal role in developing artificial intelligence, has issued a dire warning about the existential risks posed by the technology. Speaking in a recent BBC Radio 4 interview, the British computer scientist and Nobel laureate cautioned that AI advancements could lead to humanity’s extinction within the next decade, likening humans to “three-year-olds” compared to AI “grown-ups.”
Hinton’s remarks come as AI evolves at a staggering pace, outstripping even his own predictions. “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before,” he noted. “And how many examples do you know of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing? There are very few examples.”
