Tonight a UPS cargo jet went down after suffering a left engine failure on takeoff from Louisville International Airport, crashing into nearby buildings and sparking large fires. Emergency crews responded to a chaotic scene in a commercial area close to the airport while authorities ordered a shelter-in-place for a wide radius. Officials say three crewmembers were aboard and the FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the accident.
According to initial reports, the aircraft experienced a left engine failure during the climb and did not return to the field. Witnesses described a massive explosion and a rapidly spreading fire after the jet hit multiple structures. Local police and fire units converged quickly, trying to contain the blaze and secure the wreckage area.

The aircraft struck several buildings and erupted in a large fireball on impact, sending debris across a broad area. Plumes of smoke were visible from blocks away as firefighters worked to control flames and prevent further spread. Officials warned residents to keep clear while crews established perimeters and assessed hazards like fuel and structural collapse.
Eyewitnesses say the jet came down inside a commercial zone near the airport rather than in an open field. That proximity increased the risk to nearby businesses, vehicles, and people on the ground. Emergency responders prioritized searches of affected buildings while coordinating with aviation investigators arriving at the scene.
Police scanner traffic reported multiple people trapped in the wreckage, with at least 25 individuals cited in early communication. Rescue teams moved through unstable buildings and rubble to locate and extract anyone injured or stranded. Fire commanders emphasized the hazards of secondary fires and falling debris as they mounted rescue operations.
Three crewmembers were on board the aircraft when it went down. Here’s more from CNN:
A UPS MD-11 plane crashed shortly after take-off near the Louisville, Kentucky, airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
UPS Flight 2976 crashed just after 5 p.m. local time and was headed to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, according to a statement from the FAA, which is investigating the crash along with the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB will lead the investigation, the FAA said Tuesday.
Three crewmembers were on the plane, according to a statement from UPS that said in part, “At this time, we have not confirmed any injuries/casualties.”
Federal investigators from the FAA and NTSB have already been notified and are expected to take control of the wreckage for a formal probe. The NTSB typically leads on-scene reconstruction and interviews to determine mechanical or human factors. Officials cautioned the investigation will take time and stressed preliminary reports should be treated as initial observations.
Authorities issued a shelter-in-place for people within a roughly 5-mile radius because of the debris field and ongoing fires. Residents were told to stay indoors with doors and windows closed while emergency crews monitored air quality and hazardous materials risks. Those in immediate danger were evacuated or assisted by first responders, while others waited for official clearance to return outside.
The downed jet was reportedly en route to Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of a cargo rotation for UPS. Flight manifests indicate only crew were listed on this long-haul cargo mission, and company officials released an initial statement confirming the aircraft was operating a scheduled flight. Local authorities and the carrier coordinated to support response efforts and provide family notifications as needed.
Scene commanders described a difficult night for responders given the fires, unstable structures, and heavy debris. Mutual aid units were called in to bolster firefighting and search teams while traffic restrictions kept bystanders away from the hazard zone. Officials emphasized public safety and the priority of getting anyone trapped to medical care as quickly as possible.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
