Bondi Beach Attack Kills Courageous Jewish Couple Confronting Gunman

Two bystanders tried to stop a gunman at Bondi Beach and were killed; the attack is being treated as antisemitic and left a trail of dead and injured while other civilians and police stepped in to stop the violence.

On a busy afternoon at Bondi Beach in Sydney, two people ran toward danger to confront an armed attacker and paid for it with their lives. Authorities say the pair challenged the shooter as he exited his vehicle, and their intervention delayed the assault long enough for others to react.

The victims were later identified as Boris and Sofia Gurman, a married couple who confronted the gunman as he moved toward a crowd. Boris managed to wrest a rifle away briefly before the attacker grabbed a second weapon and opened fire, killing both of them.

“We are heartbroken by the sudden and senseless loss of our beloved Boris and Sofia Gurman,” the family said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness.”

A dashcam recording of the struggle was obtained and verified by Reuters, and an eyewitness description included a direct account of the moment the shooter was tackled. “You see the shooter here — he fired shots from here, shooting from here. And then look, this guy went and tackled him, the shooter, knocking him to the ground. At that point, he had already grabbed the gun,” the witness reported in a Reuters translation.

Investigators say the attackers were a father and son who came prepared to strike a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, and the assault left a grim toll. Fifteen people were killed, including two police officers who were among those who responded, and more than 24 people suffered injuries in the chaos.

Officials reported that the father, aged 50, was killed at the scene and the son was critically injured by responding authorities. Authorities also discovered an improvised explosive device inside the attackers’ vehicle along with a homemade flag connected to ISIS, indicating the assault had clear ideological motives.

Other civilians stepped in amid the shooting and helped stop further slaughter, at great personal cost. One bystander, Ahmed al Ahmed, wrestled a gun from one of the attackers and was shot multiple times in the struggle; he has already undergone surgery and faces the possible loss of his left arm.

The act of ordinary people jumping into harm’s way underlines both the danger that day and the courage on display when institutions can be overwhelmed. Those who tackled the shooters bought time for others to escape, and their actions have been described by friends and neighbors as heroic in the face of a clearly targeted, antisemitic attack.

From a law-and-order perspective, the incident highlights the need for determined security measures against ideological violence and for swift, competent policing when mass-casualty threats appear. The presence of an explosive device and extremist paraphernalia in the vehicle reinforces concerns about organized, hate-driven violence that crosses borders and ideologies.

Families, witnesses, and community leaders in Sydney have been left to grieve and to demand answers about how such a plot developed and how it was allowed to reach public spaces. The Jewish community in particular has been shaken by an attack that targeted a religious celebration, and many are calling for clearer protections around gatherings and events.

Investigations continue as authorities piece together the attackers’ planning and movements, and as hospitals tend to the wounded and identify the fallen. Meanwhile, the actions of Boris and Sofia Gurman, and of other bystanders who intervened, have become a central part of the public record of that day, emblematic of people who chose to act when violence erupted.
