Murphy Admits Democrats Prioritize Illegal Immigrants Over Americans

Sen. Chris Murphy’s offhand line about who Democrats “care about most” lit up debate, tied to violence at the border, and prompted sharp reactions from Republicans who see it as proof of a misplaced set of priorities.

That brief exchange from 2024 resurfaced because it cuts to the core of a long political argument about immigration and responsibility. Republicans are using it as evidence that Democratic priorities are out of step with voters who want secure borders and public safety. The clip is short, blunt, and easy to run in ads.

Murphy sat down with Chris Hayes in February 2024 and offered a candid takeaway that Democrats could not hide.

“The negotiation didn’t have a path to citizenship,” Hayes says. “It was entirely on their terms in order to get Ukraine funding, right?”

“That’s been a failed play for 20 years, so you are right that that has been the Democratic strategy for 30 years, maybe,” Murphy replies, “and it has failed to deliver for the people we care about most: the undocumented Americans that are in this country.”

That phrase landed like a gut punch for many voters. There’s no such thing as an “undocumented American,” Senator. They’re illegal immigrants and they should be deported.

The timing of the clip makes the point feel urgent for people paying attention to violent crime tied to illegal immigration. Just last week, Sheridan Gorman was gunned down by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela in Chicago while she was on a walk with friends. She was 18 years old.

Local reactions to that homicide exposed sharp cultural divides about blame and responsibility. A Chicago alderwoman suggested the victim “must have ‘startled’ the person with a gun” and implied the young woman was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” language that many found tone deaf and infuriating.

Yes, he did. The admission is straightforward and Republicans argue it reveals a broader trend: policy choices that favor noncitizens over American citizens.

That interpretation drove a wave of criticism from conservative leaders and commentators. Senator Bernie Moreno called Murphy’s comments “sick stuff.”

For months now, conservatives have argued that Democratic border policies amount to a devaluation of American lives and public safety. It is a blunt political message: if leaders prioritize those here illegally above citizens, trust erodes quickly and voters look for alternatives who will enforce the law.

This debate isn’t abstract. It ties into practical consequences like how border policy affects airport staffing, TSA operations, and the broader sense of order in communities. When travelers face long lines and public safety incidents rise, critics point to policy choices in Washington and state capitals that they say put politics ahead of common-sense enforcement.

That is why Republicans are talking about running the Murphy clip hard in the midterms. It is short, it is quotable, and it lines up with a simple argument voters understand: secure borders, respect for the rule of law, and priority for citizens’ safety.

Campaign messaging will lean on clear, repeatable lines and concrete stories to make the case to swing voters. The goal is to turn this moment of candor into a test for candidates who defend current policies and a reminder to voters about what each party stands for on immigration and public safety.

Editor’s Note: Democrats are causing chaos at airports and inflicting pain on the American people simply because they want to keep illegal aliens from being deported. The point will continue to resonate with voters who feel the system is failing them and want leaders who will secure the border.
