Fort Worth authorities arrested a 33-year-old man after he allegedly shot another man in the groin at an apartment complex; family members say the shooter acted to protect minors who had been targeted, while police continue investigating the incident and the suspect faces aggravated assault and other prior charges.
Police say the shooting happened at an apartment complex in Fort Worth after officers were called about a man who appeared to be under the influence and was allegedly propositioning minors for sex. Responding officers reported hearing a single gunshot as they arrived on the scene at 11:43 a.m., and they began a search in the area immediately afterward.
Authorities located a man near a nearby convenience store who had been shot in the groin and transported him to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Police identified that man as matching the description of the person who had reportedly been soliciting children prior to the shooting.
The person arrested was identified as Marckus Renfro, 33. Law enforcement arrested him on Friday and the Tarrant County Jail records show he was booked on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; the booking also listed earlier charges in unrelated incidents, including assault causing bodily injury and evading arrest or detention.
Renfro’s family members told investigators and neighbors that he fired the shot to protect a group of underage girls who had been targeted, though officials say they have not yet confirmed the family’s version through the investigation. Community members have expressed concern about the alleged behavior of the man who was shot, saying residents had been warning each other and alerting authorities when they spotted troubling interactions.
Dontavius Williams, a relative by marriage, described how neighborhood residents and parents were already alarmed about the individual before the shooting. “My little cousin told me that the dude said, ‘Oh, come back and smoke some meth with me,’ you know, ‘have some drugs,'” Williams said. He added that people in the area “had already heard that a certain dude had been messing with other little kids around here.”
Jamie Ramirez Renfro, Marckus’ wife, recounted the brief confrontation that preceded the gunfire, saying the two men “exchanged some words.” She added a longer description of what she witnessed: “When Mar[c]kus was walking away, he just ran up on him, like he was trying to approach him, like to hurt him in some way,” she said. “And then he said something to Mar[c]kus, and then he turned around, and Mar[c]kus shot.”
Investigators are treating the case as an aggravated assault while they sort through witness statements, surveillance footage and physical evidence at the scene. Officials have not released additional details about any ongoing interviews or whether charges related to the alleged solicitation of minors will be filed against the man who was shot.

The arrest raises questions about community safety and how neighbors and law enforcement respond when there are allegations involving minors. Neighbors described repeated complaints and unease, and the shooting itself took place in public near multiple residences and a store, which has added urgency to the police probe.
Legal experts note that claims of protecting minors can figure into public reaction, but the formal criminal process focuses on verification, intent and proportionality when assessing self-defense or defense-of-others claims. Renfro now faces a criminal charge that will be processed through the county court system, where prosecutors will determine whether to pursue additional counts based on the full investigation.
As this case moves forward, authorities will continue to review evidence and decide on next steps, including whether any further arrests or charges are warranted. Residents say they want clarity and safety, and police say the investigation remains active as they work to verify witness accounts and piece together the timeline of events.
