DC Police Suspend 13 After Alleged Crime Data Manipulation

Washington’s police department is confronting allegations that employees altered crime statistics, with a group of high-ranking officers placed on administrative leave as leaders promise an internal accountability process.

The scandal has simmered for months as reports suggested crime figures were being downgraded and reclassified inside the Metropolitan Police Department. President Trump has mentioned the issue, and now local leaders have moved to suspend those accused while the department conducts an internal review. Thirteen people are publicly known to be on administrative leave and face possible disciplinary action, including termination.

The department says it will follow its established rules and procedures while the inquiry runs its course, and city officials have already reassigned several leadership roles. Those actions are meant to stop any ongoing manipulation and to stabilize operations while the facts are gathered. The situation has prompted broader questions about transparency and who in the chain of command authorized changes to reporting practices.

Thirteen officials within D.C.’s police department were placed on administrative leave Monday after an internal investigation into allegations of manipulated crime data.

At a news conference Tuesday, interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said 13 officials were placed on administrative leave due to the “allegations of misconduct.” He said he was unable to share further details about the suspensions.

“All 13 members were served … a notice of proposed adverse action,” Carroll said. “No one was fired.”

“I cannot get into any specifics of the investigation. The administrative process must be allowed to take its course, and that process is outlined in our MPD general orders,” he said.

Carroll also announced the replacements of some of the high-ranking members of the department who were suspended.

Local law enforcement watchdogs and journalists have long suspected that some crime tallies in the capital were massaged to make trends look better than they were. Officials have reportedly downgraded or reclassified incidents so totals for serious offenses would appear to fall, a practice that undermines public trust when discovered. That pattern drew fresh scrutiny after a notable rise in violent crime in 2023 forced a replay of old record-keeping choices.

Investigations launched by internal auditors and outside reviewers aim to map who changed reports, why those changes were made, and whether the public was intentionally misled. Accountability means more than suspensions; it requires clear corrective steps, stronger safeguards, and routine audits so future numbers reflect reality. Citizens deserve to know whether the statistics guiding policy and resource allocation are honest and verifiable.

From a Republican viewpoint, the episode underscores a deeper problem with institutions that shield mistakes and prefer optics over outcomes. When agencies prioritize appearances, they betray both victims and residents who rely on accurate information to stay safe and to plan. Elected leaders must insist on straightforward answers and not allow bureaucracy to slow or obscure corrective action.

Departments that manipulate data weaken the case for any reform built on sound evidence, and the fallout can ripple into budget fights, policing strategy, and community relations. Restoring confidence will take time and clear demonstrations that the department will not tolerate cooked books or leadership that protects them. For now, the city watches as the administrative process unfolds and waits for concrete evidence that those in charge of public safety have been put back on a path of integrity.
