Mullin Vows Law And Order, Defends ICE Agents In NJ

Markwayne Mullin, now serving as Homeland Security secretary, pushed back hard after days of clashes outside an ICE detention center in Newark, warning that violent attempts to unmask or free detainees will not be tolerated and that officers will be protected while enforcing the law.

Protesters have gathered for several days outside the Newark ICE facility while detainees are reported to be staging a hunger strike and Governor Mikie Sherrill says she was denied entry. The scene has turned chaotic, with operatives on the left demanding access and local officials trading accusations. This standoff has put federal officers in the middle of a tense public fight.

Mullin publicly criticized the protests and the attempt to force agents to reveal identities, saying such tactics aim to free people accused of serious crimes. He warned that activists appear willing to put agents and communities at risk to block enforcement. That warning is central to why federal officials are not backing down.

Mullin is back, vowing that law and order will prevail after yet another night of chaos in New Jersey.

“Assaulting and obstructing @ICEgov law enforcement is a crime and felony,” Mullin wrote. “Throughout the night, nine rioters were arrested. Anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Law and order will prevail.”

It is important to understand how dangerous this is for ICE agents when protesters try to identify them, sometimes by sight, and threaten them directly. One account says a protester saw the face of an agent and issued a threat, which shows how quickly demonstrations can cross into violence. Protecting officers from harassment is a basic responsibility of the department.

Officials on the ground reported multiple arrests and said some demonstrators attempted to obstruct access and operations at the facility. Those actions not only disrupt custody of detainees but put staff and detainees at added risk. Federal law treats assaults on officers as felonies for good reason.

Here’s video of that confrontation. (Editor’s Note: This video contains adult language. Listener discretion is advised)

There is a deliberate effort by some organizers to unmask ICE agents so their families can be targeted, and that is no accident. This intimidation strategy is meant to pressure agents into standing down and to disrupt routine enforcement work. When you strip away the slogans, the tactic is clearly aimed at making officers vulnerable.

That threat to personal safety is not hypothetical. Intimidation and doxxing have real consequences for officers and their loved ones, and those consequences can escalate into physical danger. When enforcement staff fear for their families, it degrades the agency’s ability to perform its mission. The public interest in safety and order is at stake.

Of course, Sherrill called the protest ‘peaceful.’ Many on the right see that framing as politically convenient and inconsistent with the facts on the ground. Labeling obstructive, threatening behavior as peaceful creates a double standard that weakens law enforcement and rewards mob tactics.

This is the kind of selective outrage that paints January 6 one way while excusing street violence when it suits a political narrative. These actions are not protected protest when they cross into assault, obstruction, or intimidation. Law enforcement agencies must treat them as crimes, not as political theater.

Editor’s Note: ICE and CBP continue to put themselves in harm’s way in order to protect America’s sovereignty and to keep our streets safe. Those frontline officers are carrying out duties that preserve public safety and deserve firm backing from leadership. When federal agents face threats, the priority should be protecting them so they can do their jobs without fear.

Secretary Mullin’s message was simple and direct: assaults on officers will be met with prosecution and order will be restored. Federal authorities are signaling they will not let mobs dictate policy or endanger officers. That stance is meant to make clear that enforcing immigration law is a legitimate government function that will continue despite political pressure.
