Talarico Campaign Evades Questions About Office Romances

Republican reporting lays out how Democrat Senate hopeful James Talarico has been asked about workplace romances after questions surfaced about his role in helping his abortion lobbyist girlfriend land a taxpayer-funded position in the Texas Legislature.

A recent inquiry followed reporting that tied Talarico to efforts to move his girlfriend into a legislative role paid by taxpayers, prompting requests for comment about whether he ever pursued romantic relationships with other staffers. The Talarico campaign was asked directly if any inappropriate advances had been made toward employees but declined to provide a clear denial. That silence is now part of the story and shapes how voters view his judgment.

Talarico has told the public he was in a committed relationship with his former chief of staff, Brianna Menard, for four years even though she had left his office just three and a half years ago. The timing invites questions because it suggests the relationship, and personnel moves around it, overlapped with his official duties. Voters and watchdogs see those overlaps as fertile ground for ethical scrutiny.

According to Rep. Salman Bhojani, Talarico reached out to him “shortly after” winning the March 2022 primary to help secure Menard a job. The campaign’s explanation is that Menard left the office so the two could date after they “developed feelings” for one another, which was followed by public posts of a personal, erotic sung poem Menard placed on Instagram about a mystery individual.

Menard did not begin working for Bhojani until January 2023, about ten months after the two acknowledged their feelings. That delay does not erase the series of contacts and appointments that preceded her placement, and it has not satisfied those asking whether any staff favors were exchanged for romance. The campaign’s refusal to outright deny other instances of romantic pursuit within the office has left a gap that opponents are exploiting.

Another Texas political outlet asked similar, straightforward questions about whether a registered lobbyist dating an elected official raises ethical issues and whether employer-employee romances were routine in his office, but the Talarico campaign sidestepped them. Refusing to answer basic ethics questions only amplifies concerns about judgment and transparency. Republicans argue that this kind of evasiveness is exactly what voters should watch for when deciding who deserves higher office.

Mixing personal relationships, lobbying interests, and taxpayer-funded positions is a recipe for conflicts that deserve answers, not deflection. From a Republican perspective, public officials must be held to clear standards to prevent even the appearance of pay-to-play or favoritism. Given the pattern of delayed hires, social-media posts, and campaign silence, conservatives see a story about power, access, and a candidate protecting his own circle.

Talarico is set to face Republican Ken Paxton in November for the Senate seat, and this episode is already being framed as an ethical question in the campaign. The lack of a firm denial on other potential workplace romances gives Paxton’s team and other Republican critics material to press at debates and in ads. Voters will get to weigh whether a candidate’s private choices and his handling of staff matters reflect the integrity they want in a senator.
