Trump Blasts Spain, Demands Trade Cutoff After NATO Meeting

President Trump visited Turkey, met with NATO head Mark Rutte, and used blunt language in a press exchange to single out Spain as a problem for the alliance and for U.S. trade relations.

On the trip to Turkey, President Trump met with NATO leadership and faced reporters who pressed him on alliance cohesion and bilateral ties. He singled out Spain repeatedly, making clear his frustration with allies he sees as unwilling to share burdens. The remarks arrived in a public setting with NATO head Mark Rutte present.

During the exchange, the president did not mince words, calling Spain a ‘terrible partner in NATO.’ That phrase summed up his view: allies who fail to pull their weight lose goodwill and credibility with Washington. The tone was pointed and meant to signal that cooperation depends on fair burden sharing.

“I’m not happy with NATO because of what they did with Greenland,” President Trump says, referring to his American national security concerns about the nation. “And I’m not happy with NATO because of the fact that they didn’t want to help us with the number one state sponsor of terror, that’s Iran. They were unwilling to help us.”

“I spoke to Germany, I spoke to France, I spoke to the U.K., spoke to Italy,” President Trump continued. “I didn’t speak to Spain. Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way, I’d like you to cut it off.

“Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain.”

After making the point publicly, President Trump looked to his team and urged action, directing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to consider cutting off trade. The instruction was raw and tactical: use economic leverage when political and military support is lacking. That kind of hard bargaining fits the America First approach he champions.

“Including visits, ok? We don’t want anything to do … watch them come running back,” President Trump said. “They treat this man terribly,” he added, referring to NATO head Mark Rutte. “And this man’s a good man, too. Great man. They’re lucky to have him.”

“But Spain doesn’t agree to anything.”

The tone of the comments reflects a Republican view that alliances need reciprocity and clear commitments, not vague promises. From that angle, calling out members who underfund defense or avoid meaningful contributions is a straightforward negotiating posture. It’s also a way to pressure allies publicly so that accountability becomes part of the conversation.

There are obvious diplomatic risks when a president openly threatens trade cutoffs while praising some leaders and scolding others in the same breath. Still, the administration sees leverage as a tool to reset expectations, especially when security support is inconsistent. That mix of praise and pressure is part of modern statecraft for an administration focused on immediate results.

Whatever the international fallout, the message to allies is plain: assistance and trade relations will reflect whether partners meet their obligations. Tough talk may unsettle traditional diplomacy, but it also signals that Washington is prepared to prioritize American interests first. That posture will shape how NATO debates burden sharing and how bilateral trade talks proceed going forward.
