Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal Stabbing of Lauren Heike on North Phoenix Trail

Zion Teasley has pleaded guilty to first-degree premeditated murder in the 2023 killing of Lauren Heike, whose body was found stabbed 15 times along a hiking trail in north Phoenix.

Teasley entered the plea last Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court. He also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of sexual exploitation of a minor tied to conduct from 2019. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors will withdraw their pursuit of the death penalty, and Teasley is expected to be sentenced to natural life in prison. Sentencing is set for Dec. 4.

Teasley had also faced charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary from 2020, but prosecutors dismissed those charges last week as part of the plea deal.

Heike was killed in April 2023 after a resident discovered her body along a community trail. She had suffered 15 stab wounds along with injuries to her hands and forearms. Investigators say DNA, surveillance video and cellphone location data linked Teasley to the crime.

Based on the condition of Heike’s clothing and belongings scattered along the trail, investigators believe she was chased over a barbed wire fence during the attack. According to Teasley’s probable cause statement, “The suspect ran after Lauren and then sprinted away before returning to the location where Lauren’s body was found and climbing over the barbed wire.”

Police previously said they believed the killing was a random attack, finding no prior communication between Heike and Teasley. When questioned by police, Teasley reportedly said Heike appeared to be “what I would want to look like.” Investigators also recovered a screenshot they believed reflected Teasley’s state of mind, reading, “When I see a beautiful woman and I’m a man,” according to ABC 15.

A police report that surfaced after the killing indicated Teasley had been struggling with his sexuality and gender identity, ABC 15 reported. The outlet also reported that Teasley was fired from one job for being “aggressive toward female employees” and was suspected of stealing merchandise.

Teasley was a former Marine recruit. The U.S. Marine Corps told ABC 15 that he entered recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot San Diego on March 25, 2019, and was separated on June 17, 2019, before completing boot camp.

Heike’s family had supported prosecutors’ initial push for the death penalty but ultimately agreed to the plea deal, which guarantees Teasley will spend the rest of his life in prison with no possibility of release.
