A powerful nor’easter continued to pummel the Northeast coast for a second straight day Sunday, flooding low-lying neighborhoods, knocking out power to well over 100,000 customers, and grounding flights across a region stretching from New Jersey to Maine.
In Brooklyn, a man was killed when a tree fell on him. The Associated Press reported the storm also killed a New York City Housing Authority worker when a tree fell Saturday. On Long Island, wind gusts toppled trees, damaging homes and downing utility poles.
New York and New Jersey have both declared states of emergency as tidal surges swamped coastal neighborhoods in New Jersey and rain and strong winds spread from Virginia to Maine.
In New Jersey, more than 4 inches of rain fell in some spots since Friday, according to the AP. Combined with a surging ocean, the rain produced flooding levels residents said they had not seen in nearly a decade.
“It’s not like a one-time occurrence,” Caroline Virenius, whose garage filled with about a foot of water, told the AP. “It’s getting wet again and again.”
In Boston, crews cleared a fallen tree that had been chopped into pieces on Doone Avenue after the storm moved through Saturday.
More rain expected, tide risk Monday
The National Weather Service said the storm should gradually weaken, though heavy local rain is still expected in parts of New England and the mid-Atlantic. Local officials in New Jersey and New York warned residents that a high tide late Monday could bring another round of flooding.
“There is another band of the storm, a weaker band, but still another band that could hit early this afternoon and later into the evening,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.
The most widespread power outages were reported in coastal counties stretching from New Jersey to Connecticut, according to PowerOutage.us.
