Wisconsin Democrats Back Convicted Islamic Terrorist

The ICE arrest of Salah Sarsour, a long-time Milwaukee community leader with documented ties to Hamas and a criminal conviction abroad, has exposed a stark split: many Wisconsin Democrats rushed to defend him while federal authorities say he lied on immigration paperwork and belongs in removal proceedings.

Last week ICE arrested Salah Sarsour, who served as president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee. Federal officials say he has deep ties to Hamas, organized fundraising for Rep. Rashida Tlaib, admitted to falsifying information on his entry application after a prior rejection, and was convicted in Israel for a Molotov attack.

Locally, the reaction was fierce and predictable. A string of Democratic politicians publicly condemned the arrest instead of addressing the criminal record and alleged terror ties that prompted it.

I live in a Milwaukee suburb with a visible Muslim community — a new halal grocery is opening blocks from my house — so this hits close to home. On a personal note, I avoid the nearby Planet Fitness because I see cultural practices that make me uncomfortable, like men watching women who are fully covered while they exercise.

It is not an idle cultural gripe. “Islam is wholly incompatible with Western civilization and we should not, cannot, and do not have to tolerate it.” That line reflects a real concern among many here about extremist ideology moving unchecked into our neighborhoods.

Which means, of course, that major Democrats in Wisconsin are on the side of Sarsour, a literal terrorist.

Francesca Hong, a Democrat and socialist running for governor, wrote on Facebook, “Br. Salah is being targeted on the basis of his Palestinian and Muslim background, and his advocacy for Palestinian rights. We know this fight for Br. Salah is part of a larger trend of attacks on immigrants that whittle away at democratic norms and legal protections for everyone.”

Calling him “Brother Salah” is an interesting choice, because Hamas would murder someone like Hong and not even think twice about it. That rhetorical friendliness toward a man accused of ties to a designated terror group is not reassuring.

Another Democratic gubernatorial candidate and former lieutenant governor, Mandela Barnes, condemned the enforcement action in stark terms. “The Trump administration used ICE to hunt down a legal resident of Milwaukee, ripping him away from his wife, children, and the community he’s lived in for over 32 years without any explanation.”

There are explanations. Authorities say Sarsour lied on his application after being refused entry, he was convicted of violent acts in Israel, and his community ties include people linked to a declared terrorist organization responsible for mass slaughter. Barnes chose to ignore those facts.

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, also running for governor, called the arrest “an affront to everything Wisconsin stands for.” That reads like political theater when stripped of the context that drove the arrest: alleged deception and terrorism-related connections.

Other prominent Democrats piled on in defense. Gov. Tony Evers wrote, “Targeting peopel because of their beliefs or background is wrong,” while Senator Tammy Baldwin said, “This looks like ICE targeting someone because of their skin color or what they believe — and that is not the American way.”

Sarsour’s public support for Hamas and Islamic terrorist causes is the very reason law enforcement can and should act when immigration protections are abused. When someone with those ties lies to get or keep residency, ICE has both the authority and obligation to remove them.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson labeled the arrest an “outrage” and insisted there was “no substantive evidence he has done anything wrong.” That assertion ignores the convictions and the falsified paperwork cited by prosecutors and investigators.

Seeing a political class rush to shield someone accused of supporting terrorism is deeply troubling. It suggests priorities that put partisan optics and identity politics above community safety and the rule of law.

Part of the response is raw political calculation: Democrats loathe President Trump and will defend anything framed as an overreach by his administration. But bending over backward for individuals accused of terrorism undermines public confidence and normalizes risk.

For Wisconsin voters outside Milwaukee and Dane County, the optics will feel alien: top state Democrats defending someone federal agents say committed violent acts and lied to remain in this country. That disconnect matters at the ballot box and in everyday safety discussions.

There has been no meaningful denial of the core allegations — the conviction in Israel, the falsified application, the fundraising ties to known extremists. Silence or dismissal from leading Democrats on those points speaks loudly about which loyalties come first.
