Leftist Cenk Uygur Defends Graham Platner Despite Abuse Allegations

Cenk Uygur is publicly defending Graham Platner despite multiple women accusing Platner of abusive behavior and a recent allegation that he forced a former girlfriend to have sex, and that defense has sharpened the partisan divide over how the media and activists treat outsiders in the Maine Senate race.

Several Democrats and others have called for Graham Platner to step down after new allegations surfaced that a former girlfriend was forced to have sex. Many observers say those accusations are serious and deserve investigation, while a vocal left-wing commentator has pushed back hard in defense of Platner. The disagreement has become part of a larger fight over how the media covers outsiders versus established politicians.

Cenk Uygur, a longtime progressive voice, has publicly dismissed the mainstream reporting on Platner and framed the coverage as a targeted campaign to defeat an outsider. Uygur argues that legacy outlets treat nonestablishment candidates differently and that prosecutors and reporters are acting like attack dogs for power.

This is what I know for sure about Platner – every legacy media outlet is trying their hardest to make sure he loses. They are investigating every minute and every facet of his life. They never do this for insiders. They despise outsiders who challenge power.

The minute a candidate says he’s not going to listen to the donors, especially AIPAC, he is set upon 24/7 by people posing as reporters. They are the attack dogs of the wealthy and powerful people who run this country – and they hate it when their orders are not followed.

So, no, I don’t believe any mainstream media story. I think they are agents of propaganda and not real news. And to my knowledge, they haven’t investigated a single component of Susan Collins’ very long and very corrupt life. Because that’s precisely the type of corruption that national media loves and wants you to think is normal.

That defense is astonishing to many who point out that multiple women have come forward with accusations about Platner’s abusive conduct. From a Republican standpoint, the priority should be believing and protecting victims while ensuring due process, not reflexive partisan cover. Uygur’s posture suggests he values ideological alignment on Israel and other issues more than the concerns raised by those women.

Critics on the right see this as a pattern: when a left-leaning figure prioritizes a political goal, allegations are often downplayed if the accused advances certain policy positions. That perception feeds anger among voters who want consistent standards applied across the political spectrum. The Maine Senate contest is now a flashpoint for that broader debate about accountability and priorities.

There is a real tension between skepticism of a politicized media and the obligation to take accusations seriously. Saying the media overcovers outsiders does not excuse ignoring credible claims or minimizing the experiences of people who report harm. Republicans argue that conservative and independent voters need clarity about where candidates stand on both personal conduct and national security issues.

Public reporting shows that one accuser, Racicot, described aspects of her relationship with Platner to a third party she dated in 2023 and turned over private messages that described behaviors she called “consensually careless” and said he “doesn’t listen to you when drunk.” Those details feed both questions about judgment and calls for a full accounting from anyone running for high office.

Uygur’s core argument is that media motives are suspect and that some outlets are essentially propagandists for the entrenched elite. From a Republican viewpoint, skepticism of media bias is understandable, but it does not justify dismissing accusations out of hand. Electorates deserve honest vetting of candidates and a fair process that protects victims and ensures truthful disclosure.

The fallout from this episode will play out in Maine and beyond as voters weigh who represents their values and how parties handle allegations against their own. Conservatives insist on equal application of standards, scrutiny for those seeking office, and protection for victims, regardless of political alignment. The conversation now centers on whether ideology or consistent principles will guide the response to these serious claims.
