Convicted Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is scheduled to move into a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas, in August 2027, according to details reported this week, as she continues to serve out a federal prison sentence for wire fraud.
Holmes, 42, will transfer to the Austin Transitional Center, a privately run 460-bed “community corrections center” in Del Valle, on Aug. 23, 2027. She will remain under the supervision of the United States Probation office during that time.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons said it could not confirm details of Holmes’ transfer, noting that the agency “does not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual, including release plans,” and that specific designation information isn’t released until after an inmate arrives at their new location.
Residential reentry centers, commonly called halfway houses, are designed to help inmates transition back into public life. According to the Bureau of Prisons, they offer a supervised setting along with employment counseling, job placement help and financial management assistance.
Holmes is currently held at the Federal Prison Camp Bryan, a minimum-security, all-female facility in Texas that also houses Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein.
A Message From Behind Bars
The news of her upcoming move follows a cryptic social media post Holmes shared on Sunday, in which she again maintained her innocence and quoted scripture.
“I was silenced for a long time,” she wrote. “And then imprisoned. I am fighting to prove my innocence and come home to my babies and the love of my life.”
Holmes said she has now been imprisoned for “1,216 endless days and nights.” It was the first post she signed with her initials, “EAH” — for Elizabeth Anne Holmes — since her sentencing in November 2022. She said she would mark future posts written in her own words the same way, explaining that loved ones, including her husband Billy Evans, have helped manage her account while she has been incarcerated.
“The truth will set you free. John 8:32. EAH.”
She also shared a photo taken before she reported to prison, showing her resting her head on Evans’ shoulder while wearing a Milwaukee Brewers cap. It is unclear when the photo was taken.
The Case Behind the Sentence
Holmes was convicted in 2022 on four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy for deceiving investors in her now-defunct blood-testing startup. Prosecutors said she falsely claimed from 2010 to 2015 that Theranos technology could run numerous medical tests using only a single drop of blood from a finger prick.
She was ordered to pay $452 million in restitution and sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison, though she is now eligible for release on Dec. 30, 2031, after having a year cut from her term. She did not plead guilty and has continued to assert her innocence, telling People in February 2025, “I refused to plead guilty to crimes I did not commit.”
Holmes also has a commutation petition pending with the Trump administration, which she filed last year.
Her final month of freedom before beginning her sentence is the subject of a new film, “You Can See Everything,” directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim and set for release Oct. 16. The movie was filmed in secret and had its first screening at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month.
