Duffy Warns Schumer Shutdown Could Force US Airspace Closures

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned that the ongoing Schumer Shutdown is already disrupting travel and could force parts of U.S. airspace to close if Democrats refuse to pass a clean continuing resolution. Airline CEOs have publicly urged Congress to act, saying the shutdown risks major economic damage and widespread flight cancellations. The administration frames the standoff as a predictable outcome of Democratic priorities, and officials say the clock is running ahead of the holiday travel surge.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has been blunt about the stakes for millions of travelers and for the aviation system. He says staffing shortages driven by the shutdown make normal operations impossible in some sectors of air travel. The warning is clear: without Congress stepping up, travelers should expect chaos in the skies.

“You will see mass flight delays. You’ll see mass cancelations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it because we don’t have the air traffic controllers,” Duffy said. His choice of words underscores the operational reality: air traffic control and TSA functions rely on funded staff to keep Americans moving. When funding lapses, safety margins shrink and the risk to schedules—and to passengers’ plans—rises quickly. Airline operations require predictable staffing levels, and a prolonged shutdown eats away at that predictability.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stepped in forcefully with a political framing that blames Democratic leaders for the damage. She accused them of prioritizing ideological demands over ordinary American travel and commerce. The administration is using those accusations to push the narrative that a clean CR is the straightforward fix.

“The Democrats are intentionally hurting American families, workers, and businesses with this shutdown to fight for free health care for illegal aliens and to appease their radical left-wing base. It’s a total disgrace,” Leavitt said. “This past weekend, Americans traveling to weddings, funerals, vacations, and meetings faced significant flight disruptions at airports across the country because of staffing shortages. On Sunday alone, more than 5,000 flights traveling to and from U.S. airports were delayed.”

Leavitt also pointed to industry pressure on Capitol Hill as evidence the shutdown is not a minor inconvenience but an economic risk. She read from a letter by airline leaders that urged Congress to pass a clean resolution to avoid further disruption. Corporate pleas from the nation’s biggest carriers are rare and they reflect the seriousness of the immediate operational stress on the system.

“We strongly support the Republican clean continuing resolution and urge Congress to pass it without delay to avoid further disruptions to the traveling public and our economy,” Leavitt added, quoting the CEOs. That line is being used to argue that the policy solution is already on the table and has bipartisan backing in practice. From a Republican perspective, the choice is simple: end the shutdown and restore funding so air travel and commerce can operate normally.

Leavitt followed by invoking the President’s calls for Democrats to join Republicans in passing a clean bill and ending the shutdown, framing obstruction as a political decision with real victims. “The President has repeatedly called on Democrats to come to the table and pass the clean CR that’s already passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support,” Leavitt said. “But House and Senate Democrats continue to block it, putting politics over people. We cannot let this continue. The President urges Speaker Johnson and Leader McConnell to keep fighting for a clean bill, and he calls on every Democrat with a conscience to join Republicans in ending this shutdown now—for the sake of our economy, our workers, and every American family counting on safe and affordable travel.”

Beyond quotes and press exchanges, the practical picture is stark: airlines are operating with thinner margins, airports are strained, and travelers face uncertainty as Thanksgiving approaches. Staffing gaps at TSA and air traffic control make timely screening and routing harder, and that cascades into delays across the system. Republican officials argue that the only responsible course is to restore government funding now so industry and families can plan with confidence.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
