USMNT Wins With Disciplined Management, Balogun Scores Twice

The U.S. Men’s National Team opened its World Cup campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay, fueled by Folarin Balogun’s two first-half goals, an early own goal, and a dramatic stoppage-time insurance strike that left the Americans top of Group D.

The match swung early when Christian Pulisic forced a Paraguayan own goal in the seventh minute, giving the U.S. an immediate edge and setting the tone for a night of sharp attacking play. Paraguay showed moments of threat but struggled to contain the pace and movement of the American forwards. The crowd reacted to the quick turn of events, and the U.S. pressed the advantage through organized wing play and fluid transitions.

Folarin Balogun was the standout scorer, netting two goals in the first half with calm, composed finishes that punished Paraguay’s defensive lapses. One of which included a stoppage-time left-footed shot into the top-left corner. His timing and instincts in the box gave the U.S. the breathing room they needed and highlighted why he’s become a focal point of the attack.

Paraguay fought back and managed to pull a goal back in the 73rd minute, testing the U.S. defense and briefly changing the match tempo. Despite that spark, they could not erase the damage from the first half and struggled to create sustained pressure in the final quarter. The Americans kept their composure and looked comfortable controlling possession when it mattered most.

Pulisic was substituted at the start of the second half, a move that raised eyebrows at the time but now looks like calculated load management by manager Mauricio Pochettino. The coaching staff appears focused on protecting key players over the long tournament rather than risking fatigue early on. That approach could pay dividends if the team aims for a deep run and needs freshness through the knockout rounds.

The final flourish came in the 97th minute with a last-second goal that pushed the lead to three and created a useful cushion should tie-breakers come down to goal differential. That late strike allowed the U.S. to close the game without the jittery finish that sometimes follows a narrow lead. With three points secured, the team heads into the next fixture with momentum and a clearer path in Group D.

The squad now turns its focus to Seattle, where the U.S. will face Australia’s Socceroos on June 19, a match that will test rotation choices and tactical flexibility. The coaching staff can afford to think about managing minutes and experimenting with combinations while carrying the confidence of a strong opening result. For supporters, the win was a reminder of the team’s attacking potential and the depth available when rotation is used wisely.
